My Heart Song

Piano keys with sheet of music on top

Each of us has a story. It is told through the journey of our lives and within each life is a song. I will be living the rest of my life penning my heart’s song. A melody so beautiful and unique to me that only I could write it. I am learning each day that there are so many layers I have to peel back to become who God intended me to be and it requires a deep dive into my pain, loss, love, joy and an ability to surrender everything – from people, to things, beliefs and ideas that no longer serve me.

Growth and truly transforming my life is some of the hardest work I have ever embarked upon and committed to do. There will be parts of my heart song that I know will only be revealed to me through time and experience, the things that don’t work out, the moments of silence, times of solitude and when I am at peace. And some parts of my song will be hidden, waiting for me to build the courage to tap into them – to the loss, brokenness, failed relationships and more. I have committed to listen. To pay attention and hear what my heart song is trying to tell me – whether to affirm when I am on track or to let me know when I have gone of course.

The parallel to music is so significant to me. Music has truly become such an important part of my healing and is like therapy for me. Sometimes when it’s too difficult for me to find the perfect words to express my thoughts, I come across a song that does it for me so eloquently. I came across this particular song by Alessia Cara that sums up my philosophy on how I plan to approach my life and journey going forward. It’s pretty much become my anthem and makes me smile. I hope you enjoy and see the beauty in it that I do. The lyrics are also below.

MY SONG LYRICS BY ALESSIA CARA

[Verse 1]
Tune in to find my peace and solitude
These empty rooms spin, and I embrace the flaws of being human
The black and white… and sometimes the greys that stay for days
The in between times
The meantimes that make this song of life sing
Play, rest, repeat, read exactly what is written on the sheet
“Don’t deviate,” they say
But I will play what’s best for me
I’ll press the keys and pull the strings
Create a symphony that’s mine

[Chorus]
And I’ll spend my life penning my song, my song
And the verses I write will speak for me
Good girls don’t make history
So I may never be what you assume
Don’t want your hooks or auto-tune
If I’m off-key then that’s alright with me
Oh and maybe you will learn this when I’m gone
My song will carry on

[Verse 2]
Let go
I let my voice be heard, then listen for the echo
My own reverb is playing
Cause I’m a movement
There’s dissonance, sometimes I make mistakes
Oh I’m human after all, I’m not your expectations
But play, rest, repeat, that’s what they ask of me
Just stick to this melody and stay between the lines
But I’ll play what’s best for me
I’ll ring the bells and crash the cymbals
My harmonious design

[Chorus]
And I’ll spend my life penning my song, my song
And the verses I write will speak for me
Good girls don’t make history
So I may never be what you assume
Don’t want your hooks or auto-tune
If I’m off-key then that’s alright with me
Oh and maybe you will learn this when I’m gone
My song will carry on

[Bridge]
In my time here, I wanna be revered and remembered
Oh let them say I came, I conquered
So I won’t fear and I can’t blend in
You can’t replace me and you cannot erase me
Cause my song will live on beyond time

[Chorus]
And I’ll spend my life penning my song, my song
And the verses I write will speak for me
Good girls don’t make history
So I may never be what you assume
Don’t want your hooks or auto-tune
If I’m off-key then that’s alright with me
Oh and maybe you will learn this when I’m gone
My song will carry on
And I’ll spend my life penning my song, my song
And the verses I write will speak for me
Good girls don’t make history
So I may never be what you assume
Don’t want your hooks or auto-tune
If I’m off-key then that’s alright with me
Oh and maybe you will learn this when I’m gone
My song will carry on

    1. I just listened for first time and love “I AM”. That’s an amazing song. I have been trying to put together a playlist of sorts of powerful songs of encouragement. I love this one. It’s definitely being added to the list. Thank you for sharing your anthem as well.
