The Quarantine Workout You Need To Get You Snatched

Times are wild, money is tight, and the corona virus pandemic has forced us to ditch the gym and now have to scour the ‘gram and the internet for the latest and greatest at-home quarantine workout routines to keep it right, keep it tight and avoid the quarantine 15 from all this quarantine snacking going on.

Well you’re in luck because I had the opportunity to participate in one of the best virtual trap workouts to elevate your vibe and help you stay on track and on top of your fitness goals during quarantine.

Without further adieu, I want to put you onto Grillz and Granola, the trap aerobics movement created by Chavonne Hodges and Genail McKinley that popped on the scene in 2016. This duo has curated and created 20-minute long heart-pumping, music bumping workouts you can do from the comfort of your own home. From their signature class, TrapAerobics to focused classes like Trap Abs and Trap Legs, you’re guaranteed to feel the burn in your glutes, tummy, thighs and arms by the time you’re done. Just the name alone lets you know it’s time to bring your game face, mean mug and get ready to sweat it out.

I recently took the Trap Legs class and had such a great experience. It was so good, I couldn’t wait to get back to the blog so I could give you the low down on my top 5 reasons you need to sign up for a Grillz and Granola class stat. Like yesterday. So let’s get into it.

1. Community

The Grillz and Granola tribe is a whole vibe. The community aspect of their whole set up was what I really enjoyed. I invited and opted to take the class with a great friend of mine from law school who lives in Ohio. It was pretty cool working out with my homegirl I don’t get to see a lot since she is there and I am here in New York. Aside from that aspect, just being in a virtual workout with other motivated women showing up for themselves during this unprecedented time we’re in was a great feeling. I love the fact that the Grillz and Granola team is not just focused on great workouts, but also on building a community around dope women of color. They are truly creating something special.

2. Challenging

If a workout doesn’t have my roots a little puffy and my body dripping in sweat then I don’t want it. The Trap Legs class I took was a tabata style workout. If you’re not familiar with tabata, it’s one of the most popular forms of high-intensity interval training (HIIT). It usually consists of eight rounds of ultra-high-intensity exercises in a specific 20-seconds-on, 10-seconds-off interval. So if you simply want to put on a cute high waist yoga outfit, not sweat and just be cute for the gram, this may not be for you. But if you are ready to get down to the latest trap, move a little something and work hard to make some real progress with a challenging fitness routine, then this is definitely for you.

3. Efficient

I don’t know about you, but I am not trying to work out for hours and hours on end. Ain’t nobody got time for that, even with all this quarantine time on our hands. The Trap Legs workout class I signed up for was a 20 minute class. Now before you start thinking you can’t accomplish much in 20 minutes, let me stop you. I was a hot sweaty mess when it was over, legs felt like jello and I felt pretty good after the sweat session Coach Genail led us through. You are definitely going to feel the burn and some the next day. And not only was the workout packing a big punch in a short amount of time, it was hosted via the easy-to-use platform, Zoom, which we’ve all gotten familiar with during quarantine, so you really have no excuse to not get moving. It’s just too simple.

4. Cost

I know quarantine has some folks money looking real funny, but a Grillz and Granola class certainly won’t. You can take single classes currently starting at $5 or if you’re ready to go all in, you can buy weekly or monthly passes starting at $19.99 and $44.99 respectively. All their options are so affordable and have a price point that can work for just about anyone. For less than you would have spent on an iced caramel macchiato at Starbucks, you can get in a great workout your body will thank you for.

5. Motivation

We are all missing the gym and in need of the motivation of a virtual instructor. What I love about group workouts is that you get the built-in coaching aspect without the extra cost. And a dope coach can turbo charge and get you through any workout. Coach Genail is that dope coach. I may be a little biased because I do know Genail personally after meeting her at an entrepreneurial event a few years back, but she is amazing (and this isn’t a paid post, just the truth). Genail is a beauty, beast and boss. She brought so much energy to the class. I love how she keeps everyone engaged, calls people out by name to encourage you and lets you know you’re doing a great job. You can tell Genail loves what she does and she’s great at it which made the experience even more enjoyable. So THANK YOU Coach Genail.

So there you have it. My top 5 reasons you need to  support two dope black women doing dope things and sign up for class with Grillz and Granola to get your post-quarantine body ready now. Hope to see you in a class soon, because I will definitely be back. Does this sound like a workout you could rock with? Drop me a comment and let me know. Would love to plan a future virtual workout together.
